How to spend a Juneau cruise day

A Juneau cruise day starts on the doorstep of downtown, and Mendenhall Glacier is about 12 miles up the road. With a few hours you can see the glacier and go whale watching on one tour, or explore downtown and the glacier trails on your own. Here is how to use the time ashore, what is free, and how busy the port gets in 2026.

Juneau is a port where the big sights sit close together. The cruise docks are at the edge of downtown, and the Mount Roberts Tramway building beside them is where most glacier tours meet. The glacier, the whale-watching waters and the rainforest sit within a short ride.

This guide focuses on Mendenhall Glacier and the whale-watching combinations, with the free options you can do on your own. It sticks to the glacier and the ride there; for downtown attractions, check their own websites for hours and tickets.

The quick answer

Off a cruise ship in Juneau, the classic day is Mendenhall Glacier plus whale watching. The whale watching and glacier day trip takes about 4.5 hours with 45 minutes at the glacier; the waterfall and whale tour takes about 5 hours with 2 hours 15 minutes at the glacier. For free, you can walk downtown from the docks and walk the glacier trails if you get there yourself, by city bus (cash, exact fare) or shuttle. From 2026 Juneau caps cruise visitors at 16,000 a day Sunday to Friday and 12,000 on Saturdays.

What to do in Juneau off a cruise ship?

See Mendenhall Glacier and go whale watching, often on the same tour, then walk downtown before you sail.

The glacier is the headline: a river of ice from the Juneau Icefield, visited by about 700,000 people a year. Whale watching from Juneau's channels pairs naturally with it, and three tours on this site combine the two. The rest of the day can be as simple as a walk along the waterfront.

Which combination suits you depends on your hours ashore. The best Mendenhall Glacier tour compares the eight tours, and how much time you need at the glacier helps you match the tour to your schedule.

Can you walk to downtown Juneau from the cruise port?

Yes. The docks sit at the edge of downtown, so you step off the ship and into town on foot.

The Mount Roberts Tramway building, also called the Goldbelt Tram, stands at the docks and is the meeting area for most glacier tours, per the listings. The day trip meets at the Goldbelt Tram building at the main cruise terminal, under a green canopy tent with Alaska Tales signs; the waterfall tour meets outside the Mount Roberts Tramway building, at a blue sign.

Check your voucher for the exact meeting point, because some tours meet on South Franklin Street or at the AJ Dock instead.

What can you do in Juneau for free from a cruise ship?

Walk downtown and the waterfront, and if you make your own way to Mendenhall Glacier, walk its trails, Photo Point, Nugget Falls and the Steep Creek boardwalk.

Looking at the glacier costs nothing. The visitor center charges a small seasonal fee in summer for those 16 and over, and some tours cover it. In salmon season, the Steep Creek boardwalk near the visitor center is one of the best free sights of a Juneau visit: spawning sockeye and black bears that come to feed, watched from elevated platforms.

Getting there is the part with a cost: the city bus is cash, exact fare, about 1.5 hours each way including the walk from the stop. The details are in visiting the glacier without a tour.

Is there a free shuttle in Juneau?

Plan on paying for the ride to the glacier. Private glacier shuttles leave from outside the Mount Roberts Tramway area and take about 30 minutes, and the city bus runs from the Downtown Transit Center.

Capital Transit routes 3, 4 and 8 run to Dredge Lake Road, about 1.5 miles from the visitor center. Let the driver know your stop is for the glacier. On Sundays the last bus back downtown leaves Dredge Lake Road at about 5:25 pm.

Ride-hailing has a thin presence in Juneau, with few cars when several ships are in, so check the app before you rely on it and plan the return. Taxis are available; agree the pickup for the way back.

How do you fit Mendenhall Glacier into a port day?

Pick the option whose total time fits your hours ashore with a margin. Tours run 3 to 5.5 hours; going alone needs travel time plus your stay.

The table sets out the main ways, per the listings and transport sources. If the glacier is the priority and you have a full day, the waterfall and whale tour gives you the longest stay on the combination tours.

How busy is Juneau on a cruise day?

Busy, and now capped. From 2026 the city limits cruise visitors to 16,000 a day Sunday to Friday and 12,000 on Saturdays, with five large ships a day.

About 700,000 people a year visit the glacier, and many of them arrive on ship days, so expect company at Photo Point and on the trails. Booking ahead secures your seat on a tour, and leaving margin on the return protects you from delays.

The glacier itself is also changing. It pulled back from Mendenhall Lake in 2025, and on current projections it will drop out of view from the visitor center around 2050. Juneau's visitor industry director told Alaska Public Media, "We're going to need to be creative." For now, the view across the lake remains one of the great sights of an Alaska cruise.

Which tours combine whales and the glacier?

Three: the day trip, the 4-hour glacier and whale tour, and the waterfall and whale tour.

The whale watching and glacier day trip buses you to the glacier for 45 minutes of free time, then sets out on a 2-hour whale-watching boat with a naturalist, snacks and drinks, rain or shine. The glacier and whale watching tour adds the Steep Creek boardwalk and leaves by boat from Auke Bay Harbor. The waterfall tour runs on a jetboat with indoor seating, and its listing promises that you see a whale or get your money back.

Each of these offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, useful if your ship's schedule shifts.

What should you bring off the ship?

Rain gear and warm layers, your tour voucher, and exact cash if you plan to ride the city bus.

  • Rain jacket and rain pants: Juneau is a temperate rainforest, and the 4-hour whale tour's listing asks for rain gear and thermal layers.
  • A warm hat and gloves for the boat and the lakeshore.
  • Walking shoes with grip for the glacier trails.
  • Your voucher, with the meeting point and time.
  • Exact cash for the bus, since drivers cannot make change.

If walking or boat ramps are hard for you, the waterfall tour and the 4-hour whale tour list steep boat ramps and are not suited to wheelchair users; the private road trip includes pickup and shows the glacier from three viewpoints.
